In various periods of Dostoevsky's lifetime (from late 1850-ies
and up to 1881) about 20 photographs of the writer were made. These
are the most important and authentic evidences of the writer's appearance.
They are a significant corrective amendment to the available memoir
sketches. In the Photography Fund of the Dostoevsky Museum 16 photographic
portraits of the writer are stored, including 6 authentic lifetime
pictures and 1 made on January 31, 1881 after Dostoevsky's death.
